BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Race fans headed to Talladega Superspeedway may want to leave super early before they head to the track because of major construction along I-20 eastbound.

Race fans are accustomed to heavy traffic on a race weekend but this year they'll get a double whammy. I-20 eastbound between I-59 and I-459 is closed for construction so fans will need to find alternate routes around the work.

The normal detour is to take I-59 northbound and cut back down to I-20 by way of I-459 southbound. But with so many fans heading east, that detour is expected to get very backed up. Officials think the problem will be compounded by out-of-town fans who aren't aware of the detour and who will be forced to take that route.

The second best route may be to take I-459 northbound across the city. Derek Scudder with the FOX6 Traffic team says the bottom line is: plan ahead and remain patient.

"My advice would be especially Sunday, leave early, get there as early as you can. There is lots to do around the speedway site and keep folks busy so you're not going to be bored. So you'll get a better parking place that way and avoid a lot of this hassle," Scudder said.

Fans should also brush up on the special traffic patterns designed just for the arrival and departure of drivers around the speedway. You can view and print PDFs of those maps at http://www.talladegasuperspeedway.com/Guest-Information/Maps.aspx.

Here are a few additional tips from the Talladega Speedway:

TRAM Services:

-Tram Services are offered at various locations. These trams run during race weekend and are free of charge to guests:

GEICO West Park, Allison Grandstand and North Tunnel tram routes will run for one hour after the conclusion of the races on Saturday and Sunday. The GEICO Family Park and GEICO North Park will not run post race. Infield Guests may re-enter the infield following the Sunday race via North Tunnel Tram or walk through South Tunnel.

-Starting at 8am on Saturday all traffic coming onto Speedway Boulevard from the WEST will be routed one way.

-Following Saturday events during race weekend, traffic will be routed out westbound, one-way only. All traffic entering the track should do so from the East.

-On Sunday at 7am, all lanes of traffic coming onto Speedway Boulevard from the EAST and WEST will be one-way.
