A man charged with child abuse will face more charges since the toddler died from sustained injuries.

Maurice Cartwright had his 3-year-old son for visitation when the incident occurred.

He took the toddler to his aunt, who then took the boy to the emergency room.

Cartwright told the aunt he had put him down to nap, and when he went to wake him, he said the boy was asleep but appeared to be having trouble breathing.

ER staff said the child showed signs of being choked. A CT scan revealed the toddler was suffering from a brain trauma and had severe bleeding.

The toddler was rushed into emergency surgery, but he later died.

Cartwright was arrested and charged with child abuse. Huntsville Police said more charges are pending.

The victim's name has not been released.
