Tri-State looks forward to Flying Pig Marathon

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

It was a record setting day for the Flying Pig with more than 10 thousand runners in the 5K and 10K races.

Sunday's 15th annual Flying Pig is expected to be bigger than ever.

Flying Pig Executive Director Iris Simpson Bush says putting the event together takes a lot of hard work and an army of volunteers.

"This year has exceeded all expectations, really, on every level," said Bush. "We have over 5500 volunteers, we call them grunts. We have, it'll be, somewhere approaching 35 thousand participants this year which is unbelievable. It's a major undertaking, but it's a labor of love for a lot of people."

Among the people running are David and Isabell Williams. The couple traveled all the way from the United Kingdom because they love Cincinnati.

"It's great. It's been a real welcome and everybody's been trying to give us the tips and make sure we know the best way to do it all and make sure we have a good time when we're here," explains David Williams.

The Williams say their trip to the Queen City has been memorable.

"The whole city's just buzzing really," said Isabell Williams. "The hospitality has been lovely and we've seen some really touching scenes today. Actually, we saw a police officer giving out toys to children. It really touched my heart."

The Williams and hundreds of other participants were loading up on food at the Pasta Pig-Out and some even washed it down with a local brew. Live music was also on hand at Smale Riverfront Park as the festivities for the Flying Pig continued into the night.

With all of the visitors in town, millions of dollars are being pumped into the local economy.

Hotels, restaurants and other businesses are all profiting from Cincinnati's renown race.
