LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – The Derby weekend fun didn't end with Saturday's final race at Churchill Downs. A star-studded event for a worthy cause also provided fun and entertainment Saturday night.
Silks in the Bluegrass benefits Operation Open Arms, an organization built on caring for children with incarcerated mothers. Organizers hope the event will help provide for the basic needs of youngsters during a critical time in their lives – needs like clothing, housing and transportation.
U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and his wife, former U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, shared a table with Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky at the $250-a-plate fundraiser.
Miss America Mallory Hagan came to show her support for Boys and Girls Haven Louisville, an organization near and dear to her heart. "Child sexual abuse is something that's affected a lot of the people in my family," Hagan said.
Honorary guest speaker Rick Moriarty came to Derby City all the way from Boston. He was a first responder at the marathon bombings. He said Derby time shows what is great about America and that he will go home remembering everything that makes the Kentucky Derby special: "The pageantry, the hats and the pleasantries, the southern hospitality, the friendship that was shown to me," Moriarty said.
Valerie Simpson headlined Silks in the Bluegrass. She is one half of the Motown songwriting duo Ashford and Simpson. They are responsible for penning songs like Ain't No Mountain High Enough and Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing.
