BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Monday evening, the wife of a landscaper who was shot and killed during an alleged robbery speaks out.

Elizabeth Jackson says her husband, 76-year-old Birl, was a hardworking, honest man and a great husband. She says her husband is giving and would have helped anybody and believes he would have given the suspects money. She says they didn't have to kill him.

Police say Jackson was shot and killed during what appears to be a robbery early Monday morning. Jackson was working outside Zion Star Missionary Baptist Church on 3rd Avenue Southwest when the shooting happened. One of Jackson's grandsons, who works with him, found him slumped over his steering wheel.

Elizabeth is understandably distraught.

"To know I can't see his face again alive. This morning talking to him was going to be my last time time to see his face, see him alive," she said.

Elizabeth says that when Jackson wasn't working, he was at church. He's been a deacon at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in West End for nearly 40 years.

Elizabeth says she's turning everything over to the Lord now. She says she's glad there are two suspects in custody although it doesn't take the pain away. There were lots of family members at her home Monday to comfort and support her.

Birl Jackson leaves behind 14 children, some of them from a previous marriage, and more than 50 grandchildren and some great-grandchildren.

One of his sons is a Birmingham police officer.
