Mt. Hopkins hiker dies after bee attack

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

A 55-year-old experienced hiker was apparently attacked by a swarm of bees and died on a trip to Mt. Hopkins, Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada said.

Steven Wallace Johnson was found dead on the side of a cliff, where he was climbing, Estrada said.

Estrada said friends became worried about Johnson when he did not show up for work Monday.

Johnson went hiking Friday, Estrada said, and had 30 years of hiking and climbing experience.

The sheriff said Johnson's body has been sent to the Pima County Medical Examiner for an autopsy.
