Hospital charges vary for same procedure, says report

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A new federal report shows that hospitals across the country are charging an array of rates for the same procedures. The report was conducted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

It found in some cases patients are charged different amounts at hospitals within the same city.

For hospitals in Nashville, treatment for heart failure without any major complications varied considerably.

  • Vanderbilt Medical Center charged more than $19,000.
  • Centennial Medical Center charged more than $21,000.
  • Baptist Hospital charged about $12,000.
  • Saint Thomas Hospital charged about $10,000.

The report suggests that people without insurance are getting hammered by these charges. This is the first time the government has released hospital pricing data.

The report lists charges for 100 of the most common procedures.

In general, Tennessee hospitals tend to charge less than the national average, according to the study.
