Young tiger rescued by ETX organization

MURCHISON, TX -

Nearly a dozen animals that authorities said were neglected without access to food or clean water have been rescued.

The Atchison, Kansas, Sheriff's Office seized cougars, bobcats, a tiger and other animals from a home in a rural area. The Humane Society of the United States as well as several other agencies transported these animals to sanctuaries around the country.

A three-year-old tiger has already adjusted to his new home in East Texas and has bonded with Ben Callison.

Callison is the director of the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch in Murchison. It is an animal sanctuary that has given this tiger a new beginning.

"He's really getting used to life in sanctuary and he needs to because he is going to be here for the rest of his life," Callison said.

When authorities rescued him from the backyard of a private residence in Kansas, they said he was covered in mud and malnourished.

"From what we understand, he was getting road kill; he was getting just rancid old chicken. He's never had a balanced correct diet in his life. He was living in mud and feces. For a cat that wants to clean himself, he wants to groom...this poor animal had never had the opportunity," Callison said.

Callison said this new member of the Black Beauty Ranch family is very inquisitive. He loves rolling around in the grass, something he may have never seen before.

This tiger along with nearly a dozen other animals was found in flimsy cages on a property authorities said was filled with carcasses.

"Some of them may have been used to feed the animals. There was a variety of species deceased, bones from a variety of species," explained Adam Parascandola, the Director of Animal Cruelty Investigations for the Humane Society of the United States.

"If we hadn't stepped in, they would have perished and there was two that had died on the property when finally the sheriff had found out about the situation and went on the property," Callison explained.

Callison said the owner of the property surrendered all of his animals to authorities. This tiger, who has already made himself at home, should not have a care in the world any longer and is expected to make a full recovery.

"He is a permanent resident here at the Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch and will live out his life here with us and never have to worry about cruelty and neglect again," Callison said.

On Wednesday, Callison said the ranch closed on property to start construction of a habitat for their rescued tigers. They have raised 75 percent and are looking for assistance in raising that last bit so they can complete their project.
