CRASH VIDEOS: MPD is watching you with 10 new red light cameras

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The odds of being caught running a red light in the city of Montgomery just tilted a little more in law enforcement's favor with the installation of 10 new red light cameras that became operational last Friday.

Authorities say these additional cameras are part of the city's automated traffic enforcement program that targets specific intersections to increase safety and prevent crashes.

When a vehicle runs a red light where a camera is installed, the system will catch three images of the violation. The first image shows the vehicle before crossing the while line while the light is red, the second shows the vehicle in the intersection and the third image shows a close-up of the license plate of the vehicle in question.

Starting on Friday, May 10, drivers who run red lights at the following intersections can smile pretty for the camera and brace themselves for a fee - there will be no grace period with the new cameras:

  • Atlanta Highway at Coliseum Boulevard
  • Atlanta Highway at Perry Hill Road/Dalraida Road
  • Eastern Boulevard at Carmichael Road
  • Eastern Boulevard/U.S. 231/SR 53 at Lagoon Park Drive/Plantation Way
  • Troy Highway/U.S. 231 at Virginia Loop Road/Christine Elizabeth Curve
  • Eastern Boulevard/U.S. 231 at East Shirley Lane
  • Perry Hill Road/Dalraida Road at Atlanta Highway
  • South Union Street/SR 9 at South Street East
  • Eastern Boulevard at Carmichael Road
  • South Union Street/SR 9 at South Street

The fine for being caught by one of these cameras is $60. Montgomery implemented the red light camera program back in 2008.

"We have seen a steady decrease in red light running where the cameras are in place, and we believe there is a clear deterrent effect that makes our roads safer throughout Montgomery," said Montgomery Police Chief Kevin Murphy.

Police say nationwide, drivers who run red lights are responsible for an estimated 260,000 crashes, 1,000 fatalities and 200,000 injuries each year.
