U.S. Marshals join in hunt for dangerous Montgomery Co. escapee

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force is joining the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office and Central Alabama CrimeStoppers in asking for the public's help to find a man who walked off of a work detail Thursday afternoon. 42-year-old Randy Earl Washington is considered an armed and dangerous individual.

Washington was ten months into a year-long sentence on a misdemeanor attempting to elude charge from Montgomery County. He had been assigned trustee status, and was allowed to go out on work details.

Meanwhile, Sheriff's Office officials confirm to WSFA 12 News that Washington should not have been on work detail at all.  Court records show Washington is wanted for attempted murder, reckless endangerment, and criminal mischief third degree out of Bibb County related to a 2010 incident.

A hold was placed on Washington, meaning once he completed his Montgomery sentence, he was to be transported to Bibb County.

"When that came up and was entered into the system, he should have been removed off trustee status. But (there was) a clerical mixup and he stayed on trustee status," said Chief Deputy Derrick Cunningham, with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

Washington was on such a work detail near Day Street Road and Terminal Road on Thursday when he walked away from the job site around 1:30 p.m.

Chief Cunningham said the office is reviewing procedures and investigating how Washington slipped through the cracks.

"When you have something of this magnitude to take place, trust me things change," Chief Cunningham said. "That's the main focus, what happened this time doesn't happen again and this person is picked up and delivered back to jail."

Court records also show Washington previously pleaded guilty to attempted murder and robbery first degree in Montgomery County back in 1995. Documents show he was sentenced to 15 years in prison however it is not clear how much time was actually served.

Washington is listed as a black male, approximately 5'7" weighing 195 pounds.

If you have and contact with Washington or know of his whereabouts, contact your local law enforcement agency or call CrimeStoppers at 215-STOP.
