Shots fired in manhunt for 3 escaped inmates from Lansing prison - WSFA.com Montgomery Alabama news.

Two escaped inmates in custody, 3rd captured near Topeka

LANSING, KS (KCTV) -

Two escaped prisoners who had holed up inside a northwest Missouri home were successfully taken into custody just before 5 p.m. Friday. The third was captured about 10:22 p.m. near Topeka, KS.

Two of the inmates were inside a stolen vehicle when Platte City police tried to stop the vehicle Friday morning on Interstate 29 in Missouri. The inmates fired shots at police officers and sheriffs deputies, who did not fire back, said Platte County Capt. Erik Holland. The sheriff's office vehicles were hit.

Shots were fired at several locations including on E Highway and B Highway in Platte County.

The inmates then busted in through a sliding glass door into a home on Route Z in Clinton County. Dozens of officers surrounded the residence, and snipers were set up. After several hours of negotiations, the inmates were convinced to leave the home. They had holed up in the basement.

In addition to the firearms that the two men obtained after their escape, the homeowner told authorities that he owns firearms that are inside the home.

A third inmate, Randy A. Ridens Sr., 57, was believed to be at large in Leavenworth County in Kansas. Searches were underway there for most of the day Friday, especially in the area of Linwood where he has family connections, authorities said.

Ridens was apprehended as he was entering Topeka and immediately taken back to Lansing Correctional Facility.

The two taken into custody in Clinton County were Allen M. Hurst, 31, and Scott A. Gilbert, 49.

Route Z between 169 and County Line Road was closed in both directions after the two bolted inside. Holland said no one was at home at the residences closest to the one where the inmates are. Other residents were asked to stay inside their homes and be patient with authorities.

Some schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution.

Holland said officers worked to resolve the situation as quickly as possible with no injuries.

The escape was confirmed at 7:40 a.m. Friday. The prison is located just east of 7 Highway at East Kansas Avenue in Lansing.

This isn't Gilbert's first time on the run. He escaped from the Winfield Correctional Facility in July 1986.

The men were being held on burglary and theft charges. They now face additional charges, including escape.
