CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Communities across America are celebrating the sixth annual National Train Day on Saturday.

More than 200 communities are expected to host events at local train stations, railroad museums and other locations commemorating this year's theme "trains matter."

"National Train Day invites communities big and small to share the importance of trains as a vital transportation option and engine of economic development and employment," said Amtrak Chief Marketing & Sales Officer Matt Hardison.

Mayor Mark Mallory was at Cincinnati Union Terminal Saturday morning to speak more about why trains matter to the community.

Built as a train station in 1933, Union Terminal once served as many as 20,000 passengers a day during WWII. Now a National Historic Landmark, Union Terminal still houses a working Amtrak station.

Union Terminal will be hosting a free event until 10:00 p.m. in honor of National Train Day.
