PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A 41-year-old mother was killed and her 3-year-old son badly hurt after getting hit by a car Sunday night.

They were struck, along with the woman's 8-year-old child, at about 7:30 p.m. as they attempted to cross a street midblock near 12th Street and Northern Avenue, Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos said.

The victim is identified as Ahlam Awad.

The boy was rushed to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Martos said.

The 8-year-old child suffered a minor injury.

Phoenix police blocked the intersection for several hours to investigate.

Martos said the woman and her children were not in a crosswalk.

Detectives said they determined the driver of the pickup truck was not impaired at the time of the accident.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
