Central Ave, 475 interchange may get makeover

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Central Avenue strip could change drastically if potential construction starts in 2015.

The proposed construction would change the way drivers get on and off I-475, and people who live nearby have many questions.

It's called a Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI), and it's a popular way to efficiently direct traffic across Ohio and the country. If funding is found, the one coming to I-475 and Central will be the first in northwest Ohio.

"You're taking traffic, and you're moving it around into different patterns so that you can get from one side of the bridge to the other and also allow for the ramps to go through," explained Theresa Pollick, of the Ohio Department of Transportation.

Three residences and some businesses could be involved in land acquisitions, but the project is still in the planning phase, so that could change.

At a public meeting Wednesday afternoon, ODOT asked for comments and concerns that they will take into consideration for the final plans.

"The intersection for 23 and Central is pretty nice," said Brian Ayers, who lives in the area. "Our biggest concern was the noise - the existing noise now and possibly additional noise in the future, if they're adding cars and adding lanes."

Being one of the busier interchanges in the area, ODOT sees it as a safety concern and the reasoning behind the project. The SPUI interchange would be a preferred alternative.

"We look at the minimal way we can impact the traffic, and also the impact to the resident and businesses in the area, because when we do a construction project, it's obviously going to have an impact," Pollick said.
