CLARE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Michigan State Police say Paul Ignacio Johnson was arrested in California and extradited to Michigan to face charges stemming from a sexual assault of a child in Harrison.

The investigation began in July, 2012 when agents from the Department of Homeland Security notified detectives at the Michigan State Police Mt. Pleasant Post about the possibility Johnson was molesting a four-year-old boy in Harrison.

During the investigation, it was learned Johnson had fled the state of Michigan and detectives then managed to track him down in California. Through a joint investigation with the MSP, Homeland Security, and the Escondido, California Police Department, Johnson was located in the city of Escondido.

In February 2013, detectives from Escondido Police and agents from Homeland Security made contact with Johnson and said they found child sexually abusive images on his computer. Johnson was then arrested on charges of Possession of Child Abusive Materials. He was convicted in California on charges stemming from that arrest.

On March 26, the 80th District Court of Clare County issued an arrest warrant for Johnson, on charges of first- and second-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Johnson was extradited to Michigan and arrived in the Clare County Jail on Wednesday and on Thursday he was formally charged.
