The City of Montgomery has become one of the first municipalities in the state to help citizens embrace electric automobiles.

Alabama Power joined Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange this morning in dedicating the city's first municipally owned electric vehicle charging station.

The station is located in a parking space at the intersection of Commerce and Tallapoosa streets in downtown Montgomery. The space is open in two hour increments to any electric vehicle needing to be charged.

"I commend the City of Montgomery and applaud the vision of Mayor Strange in recognizing a need for electric vehicle owners in the city," said Leslie Sanders, vice president of Alabama Power's Southern Division. "As a point of pride, the City of Montgomery is among the first municipalities in Alabama to install public charging for electric vehicles.  Through our ongoing partnership with the city, we will be collecting valuable data on public charging at this site – information that will help us better serve our customers in Montgomery and across the state who are interested in learning more about plug-in electric vehicles."

Mayor Strange said during the dedication there are approximately 100 electric cars currently in use in Montgomery.
