WESTFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Police tape circled a busy Westfield intersection Monday afternoon as investigators worked to piece together a tragic accident that left a little boy dead.

Witnesses told CBS 3 he had been out on an afternoon bike ride down Montgomery Street with his mother.

"I see the kid crossing the road, all of a sudden I hear the truck coming, the next thing you know the kid's still in the middle, the truck tried to stop but it was too late," said bystander Tony Pedro.

Pedro had been standing on his steps and ran to help.

"The driver came out of the truck, touching his head and it was a real ugly scene, to be honest, and I ran back inside grabbed the phone and called 911," he said.

The 7-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police covered the dump truck with a tarp as Hampden County District Attorney Mark Mastroianni and a reconstruction team investigated.

It happened at a busy intersection where Crown, Montgomery and Prospect streets intersect, a fast-moving and dangerous section of road according to neighbors.

"They need to either put a stricter speed limit or stop signs on each street because this needs to stop" said Cinthya Padro who lives nearby.

Neighbors also say it's a community with many young children that they'll keep a closer eye on after Monday's tragedy.

"As a mother, he was close to my daughter's age, so I couldn't even think of what my daughter's going through right now," Padro said.

"I have a 6-year-old of my own, seeing something like this just hits close to home," said bystander Shakeem Scott.

"The first thing I thought of was my grandkids because they were going to go out back and ride their bikes, so I ran back and told them to put the bikes back," Pedro said.

The child's family has been notified, but authorities are not releasing his name.

It is not clear at this time whether the driver of the dump truck was speeding or whether he faces any citations.
