INDEPENDENCE, LA (WAFB) -

Authorities said a 15-year-old girl may be facing charges after driving without a license and losing control of a car in a crash that left a 10-year-old girl dead Monday afternoon.

The crash happened on LA 1054 just north of LA 40 in Independence around 4:30 p.m. The victim's name was not released.

Louisiana State Police said the teen was driving a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am on LA 1054 when the car drifted off the highway. Troopers said she then overcorrected, causing the car to spin as it crossed back over the highway. They reported the Pontiac then went into a ditch and flipped.

According to investigators, the 10-year-old girl was sitting in the back seat behind the driver. They said she was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected from the car. She was taken to Lallie Kemp Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries and later died.

LSP reported a 12-year-old boy sitting in the front seat was completely thrown from the car when it overturned. He was not buckled either. According to reports, despite not being properly restrained, the driver stayed in the car. A 9-year-old boy in the back seat on the passenger side was the only occupant wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. He also remained in the car through the flip.

The driver and other two kids were taken to North Oaks Medical Center with minor to moderate injuries. No further details on their conditions were given.

The driver's name was not released. However, troopers said their investigation is ongoing and possible charges are pending against the teen.
