Rossford Police Department needs grant, or loses detective

ROSSFORD, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Rossford Police Department has been approved to apply for a grant to hire a new officer. If it fails to get the grant, it could mean losing its only detective.

If the department doesn't get the grant, its detective could be moved to a patrolman, leaving the detective position vacant.

The Department of Justice has offered police departments across the nation the opportunity to apply for this grant to hire a new officer. If approved, the RPD is only eligible to get one officer because it has less than 20 officers on staff. Currently, there are 12 staff members, with two patrol officers. However, one is on leave and the other is a detective.

Chief Glenn Goss says the department needs the grant because the detective position is too valuable to lose.

"For the patrol division, I have two officers out. So, this will allow me to replace at least one of those at this time and have more officers on the road," said Goss.

The grant will not exceed $125,000 over a three-year period. It will cover up to 75 percent of the new officer's salary, with the rest being covered by the city of Rossford.

The deadline for the department to send its application is June 4.
