UNION SPRINGS, AL (WSFA) -

Investigators in Union Springs tell WSFA 12 News it happened on Morningview Court off Highway 223 near downtown. Sgt. Nathan Williams pulled over a Hispanic driver Williams suspected was drunk. During the course of the traffic stop, Sgt. Williams allegedly took the man's billfold and stole hundreds of dollars.

The allegations shocked Ronnie Dees because he says he knows of Williams.

"From what I know of him he's a nice guy and never gave me any problems and I didn't give him any problems," said Dees.

Court records show Nathan Williams faces two charges; third degree theft and an ethics violation, a misdemeanor and a felony.

We're told Williams turned himself in Wednesday to the Bullock County Sheriff's Department and posted his $6,000 bond. Williams submitted his resignation to the city earlier this week.

The case is being handled by the Bullock County District Attorney's office. Williams, meantime, was a 7-year veteran, a clean record, according to the police chief.

""No issues. He was a good officer and did his job," said chief Clarence Wheeler.

The chief says he is modifying the police department's training. He is forcing his officers to take a refresher course in ethics.

"We want them to understand the liabilities and everything," said Wheeler.

Chief Wheeler says the actual stop of the driver was a legitimate stop and the driver faces a DUI charge.

Through chief Wheeler WSFA 12 News invited Williams to tell his side of the story but we never heard from him. Court records show he does not have an attorney.

For now Ronnie Dees wonders what went wrong with his friend who took the oath to serve and protect.
