Despite chilly temps, people flock to pools for Memorial Day weekend

Posted: Updated:

It is the unofficial first weekend of the summer, when pools open and people flock to the water.

While it's a little chilly for taking a dip in the pool, that didn't stop people from finding plenty of water to dive into.

The first stop was Oceans of Fun, which officially opened at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

"It's a completely new park - food offerings, new chairs, new bath houses," said Hollye Gurley, the director of marketing for Worlds and Oceans of Fun.

By donating to local food bank Harvesters, a few people got first crack at the new water slides.

"They're very fun, and I love them," said Jaden Sutton, 13.

It was barely 70 degrees when Oceans of Fun opened, but it didn't seem to bother the diehards.

Jaden was quick to say it wasn't cold when asked about the weather.

The next stop was Bluejacket Pool in Overland Park, KS, where people took turns making big splashes after jumping off the diving boards.

Saturday is opening day for public pools across the metro, including the final stop in Lenexa, KS.

"The water is definitely cold," said Robert Beck. "It's like this every year, but the kids have been dying to come for a couple weeks now, so we came as soon as it opened."

For Beck and his family, Memorial Day weekend means it's time to get outside.

"Everyone's not cooped up in the house. It's better on everyone's nerves when we can get out," he said.
