Avondale is winner of Reds Community Fund makeover

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

The Reds Community Fund and Procter & Gamble North America Marketing announced the Avondale neighborhood in Cincinnati is the winner of the 2013 P&G/Reds Community Makeover.

As the winner, Avondale will receive a complete field renovation makeover for three baseball fields behind Hirsch Recreation Center along with various community projects at Hirsch and Gabriel's Place.

The ballfields, which are home to Knothole District #1 teams, will be restored and updated and a new T-ball field will be constructed.

Projects at Gabriel's Place will include building an additional "hoop house" for the community garden and professional assistance to further develop the Farmer's Market for the residents of Avondale.

"We are deeply moved by the Reds and Procter & Gamble's willingness to join into the transformation of Avondale," said Ozie Davis, executive director of the Avondale Comprehensive Development Corp. "The impact that this investment will make at Gabriel's Place, Hirsch Recreational Center and the ballfields will be huge and long lasting. The people of Avondale are forever grateful."

The project will include support from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, Green B.E.A.N., LISC Greater Cincinnati and The Uptown Consortium. Additional support will be provided by members of the Reds Grounds Crew along with Reds corporate sponsors and partners.

The project began in the spring and will culminate on August 8 when over 300 volunteers from P&G North America Marketing, along with Reds Community Fund staff and board members, will participate in a day-long volunteer project in Avondale.

For the past four years, winners have been selected from applications submitted by communities throughout Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. The goal of the annual program is to choose a special field renovation project that will improve local youth baseball or softball programs.

P&G and the Reds Community Fund have partnered for the annual P&G Community Day volunteer service projects featuring P&G employees renovating ballfields and community parks around Cincinnati:

• 2010: Over 125 P&G North American Marketing employees refurbished Brandon Phillips Field and built a new high school girls softball field ("P&G Field") in Winton Place.

• 2011: Over 300 P&G North American Marketing employees built a youth field in Winton Place and high school field in North College Hill.

• 2012: Over 400 P&G North America Marketing employees restored the Cheviot Memorial Fields, historic grandstand and Cheviot Memorial Fieldhouse.
