Jeff's Journal - 9/2/04

Everybody's undefeated and that goes for your fearless, peerless (not to mention clueless) prognosticator.

So without Freddy Adu and further adieu, let's begin our second season of college football picks. And see how long we can stay undefeated.

South Carolina at Vanderbilt - The only conference matchup in the SEC this week. You can see it Saturday on WSFA at 11:30. This would be a huge win for Vandy. I'm picking the Commodores in my first Upset Special of the season. Vanderbilt 21, South Carolina 17

Georgia Southern at Georgia - The first of many non-conference yawners. The Bulldogs tune up with a blowout. Georgia 49, Georgia Southern 10

Oregon State at LSU - Remember Mike Riley? He almost became Alabama's coach a few years ago. Now Riley's at Oregon State, where he'll get to play both defending national champs this year (Southern Cal and LSU). Good luck, coach. LSU 42, Oregon State 14

Tulane at Mississippi State - Sylvester Croom wins his head coaching debut. Mississippi State 24, Tulane 20

Middle Tennessee at Florida - I'd already predicted a 45-21 Florida victory when the game was postponed by Hurricane Frances.  I'll stick with that score when the Gators and Blue Raiders make it up October 16th.

Memphis at Ole Miss - The Tigers beat the Rebels last year with Eli Manning. So should we expect another Memphis win now that Eli's gone? Not so fast, my friend. Ole Miss 31, Memphis 21

New Mexico State at Arkansas - The rebuilding Razorbacks lay the foundation without breaking a sweat against the Aggies. Arkansas 44, New Mexico State 17

Kentucky at Louisville - One of two Sunday games in the SEC this week. Bobby Petrino is back for his second season at Louisville. A win over the Wildcats will have more athletic directors, trustees and school presidents making flight plans for that Indiana airport that hosted the Auburn contingent last November. Louisville 31, Kentucky 28

UNLV at Tennessee - Sunday night in Neyland Stadium. And you thought it got rowdy on the Strip in Vegas. Tennessee 42, UNLV 17

Louisiana-Monroe at Auburn - Consider this another Saturday scrimmage at Jordan-Hare. And count next week's trip to Starkville as the real season opener. Auburn 56, Louisiana-Monroe 7

Utah State at Alabama - Let's see what those freshmen receivers can do with 83,000 Tide fans watching. Alabama 38, Utah State 14

Troy at Marshall - The Thundering Herd has been plotting revenge ever since Troy fans tore down the goalposts last year at Movie Gallery Stadium. Marshall 31, Troy 21

Tuskegee at West Alabama - The Golden Tigers already have their first win under the belt. Win #2 will be much more difficult, but Rick Comegy thinks this team is special and the Journal is inclined to agree with him. Tuskegee 27, West Alabama 24

Huntingdon College at Louisiana College - I don't know thing one (or thing two) about the Hawks' opponent. But I know Huntingdon coach Mike Turk is building a winner. Could the first win in program history come this week? I'll say it happens next week in Montgomery. Louisiana College 29, Huntingdon 28

Alabama State vs. Howard - The Detroit Football Classic. The Hornets dig playing in the Lions' home stadium. Keldrick Williams will remind those Motor City fans of a guy they used to enjoy watching - Barry Sanders. Alabama State 35, Howard 14

There you have it. Fourteen predictions and one Frances postponement. If I run the table I'll announce my retirement next week and quit while I'm ahead.

See you next week!

God bless - Jeff
