GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -
The mother of a 9-year-old Glendale girl who was found safe after running away from her home Sunday morning said her two other children are also frequent runaways.
One of them had been caught near the border recently, according to a police report.
Taylor Jo Challis left home in search of her 16-year-old sister, who was listed as a runaway, officers said. Police said they found her at Circle K. She admitted the younger girl was with the assistant manager of the complex in his apartment at 67 Avenue and Olive.
As officers went to question others in the case, they learned the 9-year-old girl had been found, the police report stated. In the meantime, police said they had administered a reverse 911 in an attempt to gather more information.
During a police interview, Taylor Jo told them her older sister had informed her she had money and a place and would take care of her.
The girl's grandfather, Terry Challis, told CBS 5 News he last saw her when they watched TV together Sunday morning. He thought she had gone upstairs to go back to sleep, but when he went to wake her up, she was gone.
"She had the bed made up like she was in bed and I went to shake her and she wasn't there," he said.
Police were called to the home in the 6100 block of West Echo Lane about 11:30 a.m.
Terry Challis said running away was not like Taylor Jo at all.
"She was constantly getting on the honor roll," he said. "This is actually her first year of softball. We've had her in tennis, she loves tennis."
Taylor Jo told police she and her older sister were in the assistant manager's apartment and when police came that night and knocked on the door, they hid and did not answer.
The older sister took her home later and she tried to sneak in the back door, according to the police report. The next morning, she ran away again and was supposed to meet her older sister but did not know where, police said.
Taylor Jo said she then hitched a ride from a woman who dropped her off at a 7-Eleven store. There she met another girl who knew her sister, according to the police report. They got on a bus to go to a local Walmart and made $10 by asking people for money.
They sat in a fast-food restaurant for awhile, went back outside and were begging for money when Phoenix police found them, the police report said.
