MOBILE, AL (WSFA) -

The Alabama Department of Public Safety is investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal weekend shooting of an armed suspect by an Alabama State Trooper.

The incident occurred Saturday around 8 p.m. when the State Trooper, unidentified, became involved in what is described as a "short, high speed chase" with a motorcyclist.

The suspect, 21-year-old Garrett Joshua Chruma, ultimately abandoned the bike and a foot chase was started.

Authorities say a confrontation between Chruma, who was armed, and the State Trooper ended when the officer fired his weapon, fatally wounding the suspect.

It was not immediately known why Chruma, an Eight Mile resident, chose to flee from the officer.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation (ABI), the investigative division of the Alabama Department of Public Safety, will conduct an investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

Once the investigation is complete, the ABI's findings will be turned over to the Mobile County District Attorney for review.

No further information is available as the investigation is ongoing.
