PORT CLINTON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Reports of an attempted child abduction in Port Clinton have police there asking the public to keep an eye out.

Two sisters, ages 8 and 10, are safe because they did what they were taught and ran to an adult when confronted with "stranger danger." Now police are trying to make sure it doesn't happen to anyone else.

"The van started to execute the turn, was going very slow, almost came to a stop, and the driver said to the 8-year-old, ‘Hey, I just bought a puppy. Would you help me find it?'" explained Sgt. Corbin Carpenter of the Port Clinton Police Department.

It happened Sunday evening, when the girls were laying outside near the intersection of East 10th Street and Jefferson Street. A white van with five males inside approached the girls.

Sgt. Carpenter says the girls immediately went and told their grandfather.

"It's very satisfying to know what we do and what the school does, trying to keep the kids protected, that it does sink in," he said. "They retain that and they're able to identify, ‘This isn't right, I don't know this person, and I need to tell somebody.'"

The girls said the van was an older model, white, with windows all around and rust above the wheels. They described the driver as a white male with short, dark hair.

A nearby witness also confirmed what the girls described. Now police need help from the public.

"Keep an eye out for this vehicle, and hopefully we can avoid any tragedy down the road," Carpenter said. "Yes, we'd like to catch the person, but first and foremost, we like to keep the kids protected."

If anyone has any information, they're asked to call the Port Clinton Police at 419-734-3121.
