FORT PAYNE, Ala. (AP) - Former state Sen. Lowell Barron and an aide from this last campaign are scheduled for arraignment June 24 in Fort Payne.

Court records show Circuit Judge Randall Cole set the 9 a.m. hearing for the Fyffe Democrat and former aide Rhonda Jill Johnson of Scottsboro. They were indicted in April on six ethics and campaign finance charges stemming from Barron's unsuccessful re-election campaign in 2010.

Barron, 71, and Johnson, 47, are accused of diverting $58,000 from Barron's campaign account for Johnson's personal use and for non-campaign uses. They are also accused of transferring a 2007 Toyota Camry from campaign property to Johnson for non-campaign purposes.

Barron's attorney, Joe Espy, said Barron reported all the transactions on his campaign finance reports, and they were legitimate transactions to pay Johnson for work.
