Alabama Department of Education releases 2011-2012 graduation rate statistics

Posted: Updated:

The Alabama Department of Education just released the statistics based on graduation rates for public school districts from the 2011-2012 school year.

These statistics - the cohort graduation rate - serve as a common formula for calculating a state's high school graduation rate as part of the National Governor's Association (NGA) Graduation Counts Compact.

In all, the state of Alabama graduated 75% of all high school seniors in a public school district for the 2011-2012 school year.

The cohort graduation rate is calculated by taking the number of students enrolled in 9th grade at a given school (the 9th grade cohort - this includes both spring and summer graduates) and adds the number of students who transfer into the school/district. It also accounts for (subtracts) the students who transfer out.

A student transferring out can be a student who transfers to another school, emigrates, or dies during the 4-year cohort period.

In the WSFA 12 News viewing area, the school district with this highest graduation rate for 2011-2012 was the Coffee County School District with a 94% graduation rate - well above the state average of 75%.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Troy City School District with its one and only high school, Charles Henderson, listed a 58% graduation rate for 2011-2012.

The cohort graduation rate as calculated for the individual school districts is an average of the graduation rate for each secondary school within the district.
