MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The recent Map the Meal Gap report issued by Feeding America highlighted what we at the Montgomery Area Food Bank have been witnessing over the past several years- more families than ever are in need of assistance.  1 in 5 Alabamians struggle to put food on the table, this includes seniors and children.

In fact, 1 out of 4 kids in Alabama is at risk – the next generation is growing up skipping meals and going hungry. We know from a variety of studies that childhood hunger affects their ability to learn, can stunt their physical and emotional development and impact their employability as adults. This is not a right now problem, this is a long-term issue that will take time to solve.

The Montgomery Area Food Bank and our Partner Agencies are working hard to ensure that individuals in need are not just receiving a hand out – what we provide is a hand up.

But we can't do this alone.

As a community, we have to dedicate ourselves to finding real solutions to poverty, particularly the ingrained multigenerational poverty that is so pervasive across Alabama. Things can only change when you decide to stand up and make a difference.

Development and Marketing Coordinator
