Cherokee County man injured in Texas train crash arrested

Shane Ladner Shane Ladner
CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

A man who gained attention when he and his wife were injured in a Texas train crash has been arrested.

Shane Ladner, 41, of Canton, was taken into custody shortly after noon Wednesday after an investigation revealed that he was not a Purple Heart recipient as he originally claimed.

He and his wife, Meg, were injured in November 2012 when a Veteran's Day Parade float they were riding on was struck by a train in Texas.

Shane Ladner injured his back and Meg Ladner sustained a shattered pelvis and lost her left leg.

Shane Ladner, a former Holly Springs police officer, was chosen to be in the parade by Show of Support, out of Midland, TX, to be recognized for his military service after being wounded in combat in Iraq.

After a six-week investigation, officials learned Shane Ladner never got a Purple Heart, a claim he made for several years. He was charged with four counts of theft by deception, false swearing and false statement to a police officer.

The theft by deception and false swearing charges stem from him receiving a free Purple Heart license plate in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

The false statement charge is from lying to detectives during an interview.

He is currently in custody at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center with an $23,100 bond.
