Pike Road moves on after MPS vote

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Pike Road officials say a set of votes by the Montgomery School Board won't slow their plans for a new school.

Board members voted against requests for MPS to run Pike Road's school transportation system, an offer to purchase Georgia Washington Middle School's building and a plan to have Pike Road students remain in MPS magnet schools after the Pike Road School opens.

"They chose to separate," said Barbara Thompson, MPS Superintendent.  "So their kids can go to their school, but Montgomery at that point is a separate school system."

"We were hopeful that our students could attend," said Dr. Ed Richardson, consultant for the Pike Road School System. "The fact that they can't will encourage us to get our program started and accelerate the development of our academic programs as quickly as we can."

Pike Road students will be able to remain in MPS programs until the new school is built. Construction is expected to be completed in 2015. Also, high school age students will also be able to attend MPS schools until the Pike Road system can accommodate them.
