PRESCOTT, AZ (CBS5) -

An 8-year-old who was accidentally run over by his grandmother had surgery for his injuries Thursday night and is expected to recover.

Surgeons at Phoenix Children's Hospital worked to repair head and facial lacerations and a fractured jaw after the boy was run over in the driveway in what Prescott police called an "unfortunate accident."

He was in stable condition at the hospital Friday morning.

According to the Prescott Police Department, witnesses said the boy was swimming in the pool at his grandmother's house in the 700 block of Bird Street on Thursday afternoon and went to the sidewalk near the driveway to lay on the concrete and warm up.

Police said the grandmother was backing out of the driveway in her car when she struck the boy. He was caught between the hitch on the back of the car and the concrete. The grandmother said she heard something and immediately pulled forward, police said.

Police said the boy was conscious and breathing when he was taken to Yavapai Regional Medical Center and then to Phoenix Children's Hospital with a head injury.

The boy is expected to be in the hospital an extended amount of time to recover from his injuries, a police spokesman said.
