NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Two young children and an adult were transported to the hospital after their home caught fire Thursday evening in west Nashville.

Heavy smoke was billowing from the home as crews arrived about 8:30 p.m. along Twin Street near Maxon Avenue.

Three people were inside when the fire started, an adult, a 2-year-old girl and a 3-year old boy.

The children's grandfather is being credited with helping them escape.

"I ran outside and took a brick and knocked the window out so the smoke could come out.  I then ran to the other side and started getting the two babies out," said grandfather Hugh Baxter.

All three people were taken to the hospital, one in critical condition. Investigators are looking into the cause.
