HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The University of Alabama's Board of Trustees approved a nearly three percent tuition increase Friday morning.

Last year, tuition went up roughly seven to eight percent for Alabama, UAB and UAH.

The proposed tuition increase is not as high, the board advised. The approved increase is about three percent and will go into effect for the 2013-2014 school year.

For students attending the main campus in Tuscaloosa, this equates to a $125 per semester increase. Out-of-state students will see a $500 per semester increase.

This will be the UA System's sixth straight year for tuition increases. There are currently over 59,000 students enrolled in the system.

One of those students is Nandish Dayal, President of the UAH Student Government Association. He said the silver lining to a possible tuition increase at the school is that academics as a whole would not suffer.

"It's medicine, and sometimes it doesn't taste good, but it's still valuable," said Dayal. "I think that compared to some institutions around the country that have had 9-percent increases, ours were actually modest."
