Suspect from late night Crockett standoff believed to be heading to Houston

CROCKETT, TX (KTRE) -

According to Detective Clayton Smith with the Crockett Police Department, the suspect that engaged police in a standoff that lasted until 1 a.m. Saturday morning is belived to be heading to Houston.

"We are in the process of contacting the U.S. Marshall Service for further assistance," said Smith.

Smith also confirmed that the department is confident this suspect is Keith Steele.

Steele was involved in an early morning home invasion on June 13 in the 300 block of Durrett Drive in Crockett.

Steele and three other males broke into the home and assaulted two males.

Steele has prior felonies and is considered armed and dangerous.

Friday night, authorities received a tip that a suspect from a prior incident was at a Crockett apartment complex.

Around 10:50 p.m. Friday, the suspect fled the apartment to a wooded area near the complex, behind a subdivision.

Officers with Crockett police, the Houston County Sheriff's Office and the Lufkin Police S.W.A.T. team were on the scene, located at Cole Creek Apartments.

Crockett authorities called off a search around 1 a.m. Saturday due to changing weather conditions.
