TEXARKANA, TX (KSLA) -

The Texarkana Police officer critically injured in a hit and run early Thursday morning has died.

Officer William Sprague passed away around 4 a.m. Saturday as a result of his injuries at Christus St. Michael Hospital, according to a statement released by the Texarkana, Texas Police Department.

According to that statement, Sprague was intentionally struck while responding to a disturbance at Grady T. Wallace Park around 12:45 a.m. When police arrived, several cars started to leave.

That's when Sprague, who was already out of his patrol car, was hit by a vehicle.

Police later arrested 21-year-old Justin Sanders and charged him with aggravated assault on a public servant. He was booked into the Bi-State Justice Center Friday afternoon.

As part of the statement released Saturday morning, the Texarkana Police Department released more background on Officer Sprague:

"Officer Sprague had been employed with the Texarkana, Texas Police Department since January of 2012.

Officer Sprague was born in Idabel, Oklahoma in 1982. Prior to coming to Texarkana, he worked for Grant County Arkansas Sheriff's Department 1 ½ years and for the Pine Bluff Arkansas Police Department for almost 4 years.

Officer Sprague is survived by his wife, Stephanie, and 4 year old son, Caden, as well as his mother and step-father, Marsa and Mike Green, father, Chipper Sprague, in-laws, Mike and Karen Anderson, two brothers and two sisters.

This is the fourth in the line of duty death for the Texarkana, Texas Police Department. The list includes: William T. Flint in 1877, J.R. Walraven in 1929, and Norris Cooley in 1988.

The Department asks that you please be in prayer for the Sprague family during this time of loss."
