LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Hundreds of military families spent Saturday supporting a non-profit organization on a mission to make sure those hurt and wounded overseas receive the support they need.

Wounded Wear, a non-profit organization, provides clothing modifications to wounded warriors.

The 3rd Annual Fitness Festival filled Waterfront Park in an effort to raise money for those who've come home with physical and emotional scars. The day began with a 5k run/walk past Louisville Slugger Field, the KFC Yum! Center and along the Ohio River.

"We will modify existing clothing with zippers, whatever they need, around their prosthetics or any medical devices they're using to heal," Jason Redman said.

Proceeds from the Fitness Festival will benefit the 501 (c) (3) organization aimed to raise awareness of the sacrifices service members and their families make for our country.

The event was reason enough for Dannette Flaherty to show her support while her son is deployed.

"A lot of people have lost focus," said Flaherty. "They think our troops have left Iraq and so the wars are over and things are coming to a standstill. However, there are so many troops who are deployed and we're losing service members all the time. So, I want to show my support for troops there and that they're still important."

"It's the community coming out to recognize the service our men and women in uniform have made and support those still healing from their time overseas," Redman said.
