PHOENIX (CBS5/AP) -

A homeless man has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for breaking into a Chandler home and attempting to sexually assault a sleeping woman.

Francisco Antonio Moreno was also sentenced to lifetime supervised probation on Friday in Maricopa County court.

Moreno was arrested June 1, 2013 and pleaded not guilty in the case 16 days later. Months later he changed to a guilty plea on charges of kidnapping, attempted sexual assault and armed robbery.

Police said the victim was awakened by a man she didn't know pulling her pants down.

Moreno allegedly grabbed a hatchet he had placed on a nightstand near the bed as the victim grabbed her cell phone. They struggled over the phone and the woman's left wrist was cut by the hatchet.

The suspect then fled.

During the course of the investigation, police found the victim's cell phone buried under weeds and debris in the alley behind 230 N. Monte Vista in Chandler, a short distance from the victim's home, according to a court document.

Police watched as a man matching the suspect's description approached the area where the phone was recovered. He started digging through the debris, stood up and then began to dig again, according to a probable cause statement.

As police moved in, Moreno fled on foot, but was caught after a short case.

During a police interview, Moreno admitted that he had to cut a screen so he could force open a window and unlock a door to gain entry to the woman's home. He admitted he intended to look around and take some things from inside the house, but once he found the victim sleeping, he said he decided he was going to sexually assault her, police said.
