A burning cross, a Smith county man beaten and shot by a family member, and in critical condition. We are told this is much more than a family feud, and outraged family members are calling it a "hate crime."
Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn is investigating a home break-in and numerous car thefts throughout the county. According to Wasylyshyn, there have been several different thefts in Bowling Green, Perrysburg, Pemberville and Grand Rapids.
The most alarming was a home break-in where the homeowners returned home to find their dogs running outside, their TV, jewelry, and firearms gone. One Bowling Green storage facility was also the recent target of thieves, who broke in and removed the outboard motor from a boat in storage for the past year.
You don't have to be a victim, there are ways you can protect your things. First check the security of the facility. Wasylyshyn says you need to look for gates and cameras to make sure your possessions are safe. There are also safety services you can use right at home.
"We do vacation checks," says Sheriff Wasylyshyn. "If you go on vacation you can go right to our website and fill information on what vehicles belong there, what lights are going to be on and we will be on and we check the house."
Thefts and burglaries are lower than average this year, but the sheriff says it always helps to keep an eye out on suspicious activity.
