PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Five humboldt penguin chicks are making waves at the Oregon Zoo.

Keepers say they're starting to venture out of their nests for the first time and explore their surroundings.

The young penguins are easy to identify - they are gray all over and don't have the black and white markings of adult penguins yet. Keepers named them after well known conservationists, wildlife experts and scientists.

For example, one of them is named after the late "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin.
