GWCCA Board approves new Falcons stadium design

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

The Georgia World Congress Center Authority Board approved the conceptual design of the new Atlanta Falcons stadium Tuesday.

Kansas City, MO, based 360 Architecture selected three Atlanta-based firms, pending final contracts, to partner in the design of the new stadium in Atlanta. The three firms - Goode Van Slyke Architecture, Stanley Beaman & Sears, and tvsdesign - each bring unique skills to the table.

"I'm very pleased because I think we came up with something that is truly unique," Bill Johnson with 360 Architecture said.

The spokesman for 360 Architecture said the conceptual design does not necessarily represent the final structure; rather, it is intended to provide direction for further design work.

"I think they just generally like the way it looks. It feels like it's in motion, it feels like it has a lot of energy and I think it's going to be a great addition to the skyline for Atlanta," Johnson said.

The new stadium design, featuring a retractable roof that would open like the iris of a camera, view of the skyline and state of the art scoreboard, is expected to be finalized in April 2014 and is expected to cost around $1 billion.

"The scoreboard is a pretty neat element. I think when you enlarge the opening and therefore you've enlarged that scoreboard then you've created a 360 degree scoreboard and there won't be many things like that," Atlanta Falcons president Rich McKay said.

More than $200 million will come from the city's hotel-motel tax.
