ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

The Saints are going marching into the football arena.

Byne Christian School will be starting a football program that will begin play this fall.

"We've kind of tossed the idea around for a few years now," says Byne Athletic Director Trevor Permison. "The opportunities just kind of fell into place this year. We felt it was the right time to go forward with it."

Permison will serve as the Saints head coach as well.

The team will play eight-man football in the Georgia Christian Athletic Association.

Byne will play a nine-game schedule in 2013, with the first game on August 9.

It's a short turnaround for a school just announcing their program now, but Permison says the school has been making preparations for some time and will be ready to go.

"We decided back in February to seriously look into it, and then start making some initial preparations," he says. "We got everything going about a week ago, as far as officially saying we're going to do this. Fortunately, we had a lot of the other stuff in place to be prepared."

Permison says he hopes to have at least 16 players on the roster, and he says initial interest has been high among current students. He says the school has also received calls from parents of potential players hoping to transfer.

Permison says the biggest challenge the Saints will face is most of the players' lack of organized football experience.

"We have some kids coming over who have played the last couple years," he says. "But most of our students haven't had that opportunity, so it's going to be a lot of learning."

One of the key factors in the starting the football program was the closing of Life Christian School.

The Saints have purchased Life's football equipment and will play at the old recreation fields in Putney, where Life played their games.

We will have more on this story tonight on WALB News 10.
