Fire restrictions increased in Southern Arizona

TUCSON, AZ (CBS5) -

Campfire and smoking restrictions are set to be heightened in the southeastern part of Arizona, including the Bureau of Land Management Gila District areas, effective Wednesday, June 19.

With wildfire season in full swing, the following are prohibited on federal lands:

  • Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire; campfire; charcoal, coal, or wood stove including fires in developed campgrounds or improved sites
  • Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building
  • Discharging a firearm except while engaged in a lawful hunt pursuant to state, federal, or tribal laws and regulations
  • Operating any internal combustion engine, except operating motorized vehicles on designated roads so long as you park in an area devoid of vegetation within 10 feet of the roadway
  • Welding or operating acetylene or other torches with an open flame
  • Using an explosive

The Land Management also wants to remind people that fireworks are prohibited year round on any federal lands.

It is a Class B misdemeanor if the restrictions are violated on federal lands. That includes a fine of not more than $5,000 per individual and up to $10,000 for organizations with possible jail time of not more than six months, or both. Anyone who violates the restrictions may also be held personally responsible for the reimbursement of the costs for the fire suppression.

The use of gas stoves or pressurized liquid, lanterns and heaters that have shut off switches will be allowed. Users should take extra precautions to make sure the stove is on a flat surface away from all grasses to help prevent a fire.

Patrons of the federal lands are encouraged to never park their vehicle over dead grass because the catalytic converter can catch the vegetation on fire.

The following districts are all under the fire restrictions: Coronado National Forest, Saguaro National Park, Coronado National Memorial, Chiricahua National Monument, Fort Bowie National Historic Site, Tumacacori National Historical Park, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and the Arizona State Forestry Division.

For more information about the affected areas and for general fire information visit http://wildlandfire.az.gov or call the toll-free Southwest Fire Restrictions Hotline at 1-877-864-6985.
