GRAND ISLE, LA (WAFB) -

The National Weather Service says there is some minor damage on Grand Isle after a waterspout Wednesday afternoon.

WWL-TV in New Orleans says that the Grand Isle Fire Department is reporting a power line was knocked down and there was some shingle damage on a home, as the spout mostly stayed out to sea.

The waterspout happened around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The video was shot by Tyler Smith of Grand Isle.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), waterspouts fall into two categories: fair weather waterspouts and tornadic waterspouts.

Tornadic waterspouts are tornadoes that form over water, or move from land to water. These are associated with severe weather. Tornadic waterspouts develop downward in a thunderstorm.

Fair weather waterspouts form when there are no storms, and develop on the surface of the water, working their way upward. Fair weather waterspouts form in light wind conditions, so they don't move much.
