BARBOUR CO., AL (WSFA) -

Sheriff LeRoy Upshaw says charges have been filed in the case of a drive-by shooting that happened on Sunday, June 16 on Lonnie Wilson Road. There were additional shootings at a citizen and sheriff's deputies during a high-speed chase.

Cason Cole Helms, 28, or Ozark, was taken into custody Wednesday and charged with two counts of Attempted Murder and one count of Reckless Endangerment.

Deputies made contact with the vehicle reported to be a silver Toyota Tundra pickup on County Road 67. When deputies attempted to stop the vehicle it took off at a high rate of speed and a pursuit began.

The driver of the vehicle began shooting at the pursuing deputies. The chase continued into Henry County with the suspect wrecking his vehicle at the intersection of AL Hwy 10 and AL Hwy 105. The suspect jumped from the vehicle and fled into a wooded area.

Sheriff Upshaw said a search of the suspect was conducted until it was too dangerous for officers to be in the wooded area at night with a suspect that was armed with an assault rifle and handgun.

Officers stayed in the area during the night and the search resumed Monday morning. The suspect was apprehended Monday afternoon after breaking into a camper at a hunting camp in Henry County off of County Road 54.

Helms was transported to the Henry County jail on their charges and later arrested by Barbour County on charges filed in Barbour County.

Helms' bonds in Barbour County total $650,000.

Lt. David Morris, investigator for Barbour County said that the case is still under investigation and further charges will be filed through Barbour County.
