On Thursday in Phoenix 10 refugees became U.S. citizens in a naturalization ceremony. The ceremony is a tribute to World Refugee Day is this Friday.

The immigrants who were naturalized fled their home countries because of persecution, war, or fear of future harm to them or their families.  In 2000, The United Nations General Assembly designated World Refugee Day to recognize and celebrate the contribution of refugees throughout the world.

Naturalization is the process by which U.S. citizenship is conferred upon foreign citizens or nationals after fulfilling the requirements established by Congress. After naturalization, foreign-born citizens enjoy nearly all the same benefits, rights and responsibilities that the Constitution gives to native-born U.S. citizens, including the right to vote. During fiscal year 2011, approximately 690,000 immigrants were naturalized nationwide.

Thursday's ceremony had refugees from Afghanistan, Bhutan, Burma, Cuba and Iraq.  One new U.S. citizen that CBS 5 spoke to says his hope in coming to this country is to give his children a better life and opportunities he didn't have.
