BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Birmingham Zoo is now home to the first red panda cubs born in the U.S. in 2013.

The zoo announced Friday that two red panda cubs were born on May 30 to mom Sorrel, age 3, and dad Shifu, age 4. This is the first litter for the red panda parents.

Red pandas are still listed as a threatened species due to the loss of their native habitat, the bamboo forests of China. According to the zoo, less than 2,500 adult red pandas are left on the planet.

The zoo says they are encouraged to Sorrel being very protective of her cubs and nursing regularly. Only about half of the red panda cubs born in human care survive.

"As long as things continue to go well, visitors can expect to see the cubs in the fall when they start to venture away from the den," the zoo said in a news release.

The red panda cubs and their mom are currently off-exhibit, but visitors to the zoo can watch them on a video monitor located inside the red panda exhibit in the Predator Building.

The zoo has not yet said what the baby red pandas will be named.
