Headland officer arrested after standoff in Midland City

MIDLAND CITY, AL (WSFA) -

Agencies across the Wiregrass team up for a standoff this morning in Midland City. Dothan E911 received a call at 6:51 a.m. regarding a subject shooting a firearm. Officials from the Midland City Police Department were sent to 100 block of Dale County Road 75.

Officials attempted to contact the suspect, Keith Rinehardt, who was armed with an assault rifle. The Associate Press reports the suspect barricaded himself inside a home with hostages. Authorities believe members of his family were among those inside. Officials then say more law enforcement agencies were called in. When the agencies arrived, officials made direct phone contact with Rinehardt. Moments after contact was made, we're told he surrendered himself to authorities without incident or injuries. The Associated Press reports the standoff lasted about two hours.

Finding out more about Rinehardt, the suspect is a patrol officer with the Headland Police Department. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to the Dale County Jail for processing. Rinehardt is charged with domestic violence and shooting into an occupied vehicle.

Midland City Police were the lead for the investigation. Dale County Sheriffs, Dothan Police, Alabama State Troopers, Ozark Police Department, Wiregrass Violent Crime Task Force, and Headland Police all assisted in the case.
