(WMC-TV) - A wrestling legend passed away early Monday morning.

Many in Memphis remember Jackie Fargo, whose real name is Henry Faggart, and the "Fargo Strut". The 85-year-old called Memphis home and mentored a young wrestler named Jerry Lawler. The Lawler and Fargo worked together many years – and faced off in the ring against each other.

Fargo died of congestive heart failure.

"Jackie always considered Memphis his home," said Fargo's ex-wife Joann Lewallen. "I think he made wrestling what it is today."

Lewallen was married to Jack Fargo in the 60s and 70s. They had a daughter together and remained in touch. She said they talked on the phone less than a week ago.

"He was just totally amazed that he had so many fans out there. He thought that he had been forgotten," she said.

Not forgotten but revered, in fact, Fargo was known for the "Fargo Strut" which is a charismatic walk into the ring. Copied by some of the most well known wrestlers, he also has been credited with making tables and chairs popular in wrestling – and for mentoring Jerry the King Lawler.

Lewallen said in his final days Fargo was thankful of all the love from his family, friends, and fans

"He appreciated everything and all the thoughts and prayers that they had sent out to them," she said.

Fargo will be remembered as a Memphis wrestling pioneer and legend – and putting his mark on the business and entertaining millions of fans for decades.
