PHOENIX (CBS5) -

An Arizona detention officer is expected to undergo surgery to repair her ear after an inmate attacked her in the Lower Buckeye Jail on Monday.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said the officer was doing a routine cell search Monday afternoon when the inmate jumped on her back and bit part of her ear completely off.

The inmate, Bobby Ruiz, who was in jail on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, now will face additional charges of aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer.

The officer, whose identity has not been released at this time, was recently hired with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said he's ordered Ruiz be locked down and only allowed bread and water.
